Magical San Miguel

Who can resist the vibrant colors and old world charm of San Miguel de Allende? Our colonial city, nestled in the Sierra Madre Mountains at an elevation of 6,000 feet, is world-renowned for its rich architectural beauty, warm people and lively arts community. Year-round temperatures keep the days warm and nights just cool enough for a sweater.

San Miguel was founded in 1542, on the site of Chichimecan and Otomi villages near the area's many hot springs. By 1750, the town had grown to be one of the most prosperous settlements in all of New Spain. Stunning buildings that give San Miguel its alluring flavor include churches dating from from the 16th century and Baroque Andalusian-style homes built in the 1700's.

Most of San Miguel's highlights are clustered around the compact 'centro' area, making it a very walkable city. Strolling our cobbled streets, you'll see: the Parroquia, our pale pink main church; the Jardín, our flower-filled central square; the renowned Instituto Allende art academy; the Bellas Artes school of fine arts housed in a former convent cloister, the Botanical Gardens, artists' and farmers' markets, boutique shops, and restaurants offering international cuisine from home-cooked Mexican to gourmet Continental.

Of course, you can't help but wonder what secret worlds lie behind San Miguel's innumerable and massive carved doors.
On your Simply San Miguel Tour, we'll invite you behind some of those doors to discover the mysterious and festive surprises within.
